Talent Try-Outs

Summer Cup

Climbing Works Talent Try-Outs
Saturday, 13 June, 2:00-4:00PM

Talent Try-Outs are designed to give young climbers the opportunity to demonstrate their potential in a supportive and structured environment. Participants do not need to currently attend one of our clubs, but we recommend that they already have a solid amount of climbing experience and are climbing at a reasonably high level. Beyond climbing ability, our coaching team will also focus on the athlete's willingness to learn and persevere, their attitude and response to coaching and feedback, as well as group interaction and behaviour.

WADS and WADS+ welcome climbers who want to further improve their performance through more structured training and increased personal responsibility for their progression. The sessions run twice a week and athletes in these groups are expected to attend both sessions and show a strong commitment to their training and development.

Advanced Kids and Advanced Youth Clubs are designed for climbers who are progressing well and would benefit from more focused coaching than our general kids clubs, but who may not yet be ready for the full commitment of the WADS pathway.

Availability in these squads is limited and attending the try-outs does not guarantee a space.

Location:

Mini Works: 9-13 year-olds and those turning 9 by September 2026
(WADS/Advanced Kids Club)

Main Works: 13-17 year-olds

(WADS+/Advanced Youth Club)

Participants will be allocated to groups based on age and experience.

Climbers who are currently in our WADS/Advanced groups don’t need to attend try-outs, unless they want to move up to a different group.

Format

The session will run in small groups of 6-8 climbers per coach. Each group will work closely with a coach throughout the session, allowing for more individual observation and interaction. There will be no dedicated competition-style climbs set for the event. Instead, coaches will pre-select appropriate boulders to suit the level of each group.

Session Structure

First Half (1 hour): Coach-Led Workshop

Climbers will take part in a structured session, which will include a range of movement and technique drills. This allows coaches to assess how climbers approach new challenges, respond to feedback and engage with the session.

Second Half (1 hour): Fun Competition

The second half will be a friendly, low-pressure competition. A selection of boulders will be available and climbers can attempt problems within a set time. This allows coaches to observe performance under pressure, tactics, attitude and perseverance.
