Weekly Updates - December 2014
The Climbing Works is delighted to be an approved Primary Centre for the new NIBAS scheme launched by the ABCTT as a parallel scheme to the very popular NICAS. The NIBAS scheme will form the content of our Regular CW Club sessions as of January 2015 and offered to those taking part on our Youth Clubs
What is NIBAS?
"The National Indoor Bouldering Award Scheme (NIBAS) is a nationwide Scheme designed to provide a structured progression for complete novices through to experienced indoor boulderers. The Scheme focuses introducing new and young climbers to the skills associated with climbing on artificial climbing walls without the use of harnesses or ropes."
The scheme is administered by the Association of British Climbing Walls Training Trust (ABCTT) and is recognised by the British Mountaineering Council, the Mountaineering Council of Scotland and the Mountaineering Council of Ireland"
Structure of the scheme
"The Scheme comprises five levels of award aimed at complete novices to expert boulderers. The Scheme is split into two parts and takes a minimum of 150 hours of candidate commitment. Part one contains Levels 1 to 3 and part two contains Levels 4 and 5.
The five levels are:
1. Beginner Boulderer
2. Foundation Boulderer
3. Competent Boulderer
4. Skilled Boulderer
5. Performance Boulderer
Full details of the scheme can be found in the NIBAS handbook.
TAKING PART ON THE SCHEME
* These awards are still under construction at ABCTT
HOW MUCH WILL IT COST
In order to officially participate in NIBAS, candidates must purchase the logbook (covers level 1-3) at a cost of £6. A binder for the logbooks can be purchased separately for £3.
The 4 week Level 1 Bridge Course will cost £50 per person and include 4 x 1.5 hour coached sessions and the cost of the logbook and binder. Participants will need to complete this course if the wish to move up to CW Club from Spider Monkeys or are new comers wishing to take part on out CW Club or the NIBAS Youth Club.
How do I get involved?
If you are currently participating in Regular CW and Youth Club you will be invited to participate in NIBAS automatically from January. All coaches on CW Clubs will use the scheme as part of their overall session structure.
Any new members wishing to join the CW Club or take part on our NIBAS Youth Club after January will need to compete a level 1 Bridge Course.
What if I don't want to do NIBAS?
If you are currently taking part in CW Club and do not want to participate in NIBAS you can still attend, however all the CW Clubs will still work towards the awards.
If you have not yet begun on CW Club but do not want to participate on the NIBAS scheme there will cease to be a way to progress into the CW Clubs.
I already have completed some of NICAS how will this affect where I start in NIBAS?
If you have completed the bouldering element of NICAS (level 3) you may be eligible to access NIBAS at at level 2. You will be asked to demonstrate that you meet the prerequisites of level 1 NIBAS and decisions will be treated on a case by case basis by the Course Director.
