The Young Climbers Festival 2014
On Thursday 28th August The Climbing Works was swamped with excited children in bright orange t-shirts ready for another fantastic Young Climbers Festival. The busiest by far, this annual event is the highlight of the year for all young climbers who participate on our holiday and regular clubs or climb with their parents in The Mini Works.
This was the 2nd year where we had split sessions with the older more experienced 10 – 15 year old climbers taking part in the morning event and the younger 6 – 9 climbers and older 10 – 12 beginners taking part in the afternoon.
The format each year stays the same with the emphasis on the whole event being about fun and participation. Any prior nerves are hopefully extinguished with some crazy warm up games to get the athletes warmed up and relaxed.
The large group is then broken down to smaller squads each assigned a coach who guides them through specifically selected climbs from a newly set circuit.
This year the competition circuit were set by our very own ‘Big Cheese’ Sam Whittaker and Senior Coach David Mason.
The morning session had a set of climbs in the Main Centre that would test everyone’s climbing skills, from dyno’s to small holds, flexibility and determination were the aim of the game.
The afternoon festival took place in the Mini Works and for the first year we had some really mini 6 year old climbers taking part. This group had to battle with some big and balancy moves, sloper holds and overhangs.
At the end of the competition each competitor was presented with an ALPKIT spot prize and CORE CLIMBING medal for showing perseverance, interesting climbing moves, dramatic falls and encouragement. A massive THANK YOU to ALPKIT who provided prizes for every single competitor and winners prizes, MOON CLIMBING for generously providing Moon Bags for the winners and CORE CLIMBING for the custom made medals.
Well done to everyone who took part, it was a fantastic day and a great show of just how talented these young climbers are. Thank you to all the parents for their support and our team of coaches for doing what they do best.
