- The Climbing Works and the Mini Works
As of the start of October 2016 we are happy to announce a new wall partnership with Rab Equipment. Fresh on the fantastic success of The Rab CWIF in March we have teamed up again with Rab as a wall partner to The Climbing Works.
This iconic Peak District based brand has been around for a long time and began its life in the small streets of Sheffield. We often see the man behind the original vision, Rab Carrington, in our walls so we are very happy to be welcoming this great company to The Climbing Works.
We've repainted and reset the whole new Rab wall and as you can see below, there are some great problems to go at.
In 2015, Sheffield City Council launched an initiative to identity itself as The Outdoor City. From the very start The Climbing Works has been a strong supporter of this project as it builds on Sheffield's already incredible heritage of offering a multiple of outdoor sports within the city boundaries (and onwards into the the Peak District). More than just about activities, the Outdoor City also brings together the many small & medium size businesses that support these sports and we are proud to be a representative on The Outdoor City 100 - a group of key enthusiasts, businesses, groups and clubs that will help the council with advice and consultation as the project continues to build momentum.
The Climbing Works was happy to be part of the first 'The Weekender' in March 2016 with The Rab CWIF being a key event within this inaugural 2 day outdoor festival. The weekend proved to be a phenomenal success with not only climbing getting a boost but also cycling and running events taking place within the city, showcasing what can happen when all the sports come together.
As an 'indoor' wall, many may say how can we say we are part of the outdoors? The easy answer is that this facility only exists because of the love of climbing outdoors from the owners and staff and the wish to have a World class facility for indoor and outdoor climbers within Sheffield. Almost ten years after opening we are a big a part of the outdoor lifestyle in not only supporting those who climb outside but being a first point of contact for those unfamiliar with what lies on their doorstep. We cater for young children to those young at heart and hope that everyone who comes through our doors for the first time will get a taste of this outdoor lifestyle and be encouraged to explore further.
The Outdoor City is not just about attracting people to our city but getting our city people active and aware of what is available on your doorstep. Whether you are a climber, runner or a dog walker, Sheffield offers so much to enjoy. As part of the project The Outdoor City has launched a great website that can allow you to find out about some of the most best know jewels in Sheffield's crown, whilst also discovering hidden gems.
We would love our customers and members to use this resource and encourage their friends that may not know about Sheffield's outdoor reputation to dive in and explore. The Outdoor City project is just starting to grow but with the support of its population and businesses it can grow to become something to be truly proud off.
The Rab CWIF is taking part on the 12/13th March and it's going to be a cracking weekend. You can read more about the actual climbing competition on our CWIF page here but below you will find out a general overview of what else is happening over the weekend
- The Rab CWIF Social Hub: A new part of The CWIF will be this large area which will be comprising a cafe, bar, retail and chill out area. We'll also be showing some classic ShAFF films over the weekend. The retail area will have Rab & Scarpa showcasing new 2016 products and some amazing one-off deals! Scroll down to see a map of where this will be within the business park.
- A FREE BBQ on the Sunday (c.3pm) with meat from Roneys Butchers and a selection of veggie burgers.
- We've also been given a load of giveaways from our sponsors Rab, Berghaus & Scarpa which we will be dispensing throughout the weekend.
- We're also hosting a raffle with some great prizes, again donated by our sponsors, which will hopefully get some much needed cash in the charity boxes. There will be 3 prizes with well over £1000 worth of kit up for grabs. You can purchase raffle tickets at anytime over the weekend.
- For the Final this year we will be ticketing 100 prime seats, right in front of the Berghaus Competition wall. All monies will go to our chosen charities (CAC & Sheffield Hospitals Charity). We're doing this as in previous years people have 'camped' out on seats for hours in the buildup. We'd rather have you walk around and enjoy the festival / social hub and raise some funds for charity. Tickets cost £3 and can be bought here - The rest of the seats will be on a first-come basis and will not be ticketed.
- The Rab CWIF is part of The Outdoor City Weekender event. Find out what else is going on in Sheffield here>>
- You can combine The Rab CWIF with some films at ShAFF on Sunday as ShAFF will be showing the Final on a big screen from 6.30pm. Find out more here>>
With so much going on we'd like to get some volunteers to help out over the weekend. We need 6 people to help out with some of the above (and scoring problems during quals on Saturday) so if you're keen to be part of the weekend then get in touch - email@example.com
Those willing to help out will be treated very nicely by The Climbing Works with goodies given out in return for help. These goodies are likely to be very nice and unique!!
On the 2nd January 2016 The Climbing Works will be adjusting its admission prices across both the main centre and The Mini-Works. The increase is a small one and has come about due to a number of increases The Climbing Works has faced across its operations over the last 5 years.
As regular visitors will know we have invested heavily in The Climbing Works over the last 5 years with the Mini Works, new walls in the main centre, new holds, Gas heaters, strength & conditioning area, new reception…you get the idea. We will continue to invest in The Climbing Works to make it the best bouldering wall in the country and we’re very proud of your support in achieving this.
Summary of changes:
• General admission prices will increase by £0.50 on Peak/Off-Peak across Standard & Concession entry
• Full Membership (one-off payment) will now be £360 (currently £330)
• Full Membership (by monthly standing order) will now be £33 (currently £30). If you are already a full member, please note that this increase will ONLY come into effect when you renew your membership.
• New Mini Work prices for <8yrs & a new category 8-13yrs old. Mini Works Peak (weekend) & Off-Peak (Mon-Fri) will also come into effect.
We have worked hard to keep any price rise to a minimum and hope all customers can see that the service and product you receive is second to none in the UK climbing market.
We are dedicated to making sure that The Climbing Works will continue to give our customers the best bouldering centre in the world. Since The Climbing Works opened in Dec 2006 we have evolved, grew, expanded and used the space as best we can to create a centre that caters from people of ages and abilities. This will be only the second admission price rise in The Climbing Works history with the last price rise going up 5 years ago on 2nd January 2011.
We are continually improving and developing the centre so that you, our customers, can enjoy the best indoor bouldering in the World. We will continue to do this in 2016 and beyond. Thanks for being part of The Climbing Works.
New Membership Prices (02.01.2016):
All the below prices will come into effect on Saturday 2nd January 2016. If you have an annual membership (standing order) you will continue to pay the OLD amount till your membership is up for renewal.
As the Autumn creeps up towards us for those keen indoor climbers it marks the start of the competition season. An early date to get in your diary is the excellent Big Flash competition held by our friends at Highball Norwich on the 18-20th September 2015.

It caters for youngsters doing their first comp all the way up to pro's getting their eye in for the Winter Season.

The Big Flash 2015 is FREE 3 day climbing festival, which takes place at Highball Climbing Centre in Norwich, UK from the 18th to 20th September 2015.
The event is based around The Flash Championship, an open bouldering competition on the DMM Comp Wall, the biggest competition wall in the UK.
