2016 Sheffield Schools Climbing Competition
Less than a week after the craziness of the Climbing Works International Festival (CWIF) we were at it again, preparing for the finals of the 2016 Sheffield Schools Competition.
Over the past 8 years the annual event has grown in popularity and this year the format has changed to allow for the growth of participation.
The date of the finals was set for Friday 18th March; prior to that school’s brought their team(s) to The Mini Works to complete a preparation session with one of our coaches. The competition rules, climbing techniques and tactics were explained and put into practice as the teams competed on 8 qualification climbs.
Once all qualification rounds were completed the team scores where added up and the top 10 teams from 10 different schools were invited to take part in the finals.
Last Friday morning The Mini Works was buzzing with 60 excited Primary school climbers representing schools from across the city. Each of the 10 teams were designated a climbing expert to help them tackle the 15 climbs set to test balance, strength, agility and trust. Teams had 2 hours to try and climb as many of them as possible with points being awarded for topping, 10 points 1st attempt, 7 points 2nd attempt and 5 points 3rd attempt. 3 points were also awarded if climbers reached the bonus hold but subsequently didn’t reach the top.

After a quick turn around the Secondary Schools were piling into The Mini Works and our hard working volunteers from Thornbridge Outdoors, Links School Sport Partnerships, The BMC and The Climbing Works were ready to go again. With the same scoring format as the Primary comp but with a different set of 15 climbs the competitors were challenged with gnarly overhangs, technical arêtes and tricky volumes.
The top 3 scoring teams and male and female competitors were presented thier medals by Shauna Coxsey (Britain’s No1 female boulder and 2nd in the World), Tom Greenall (GB junior Team Manager) and James Mchaffie (BMC Youth Officer). Prizes, medals and trophies were donated by some of the top climbing brands in the UK.
