WADS/Advanced Kids Club Selection Day 2019

What is WADS?

WADS stands for Works Advanced Development Squad. It is a group aimed at talented and motivated climbers that have shown their dedication to the sport through their attendance in our regular clubs or their performance in our annual Young Climbers Festival. Our aim is to nurture and develop this talent, to help them become a well-rounded and happy climber. The sessions help the children to try a variety of disciplines as well as bouldering, such as roped and outdoor climbing. WADS is aimed at 10-14 year olds. WADS+ is aimed at over 14s. For any aspiring WADS, we also have a Mini WADS club for 6-9 year olds.

Why are we having a selection day?

For the first time, we will be hosting a selection day for our WADS/WADS+  groups. In the past we have always invited our WADS members by coach recommendation and/or performance in our annual Young Climbers Festival. The introduction of the selection day, will give anyone a chance to show their interest in a format that is fair and unbiased. The results from this selection day will help us determine the best groups for each individual climber. This may be WADS, Advanced Kids Club or Climbing Works Club, and either WADS+ or Youth Group.

Who is it aimed at?

This selection day is aimed at anyone between the ages of 10-17 years old who would like the opportunity to develop their talent for climbing further. They do not have to already attend one of our clubs, but due to the format of the competition we recommend that they have a fair amount of climbing experience and climb at a reasonably high level.

The selection day will take place on Sunday the 30th June 2019. The event will be split into Youth A + B in the morning and Youth C and D in the afternoon/evening. Both competitions will be done using a scramble format, and competitors will be judged but not spotted on the blocs.

Are you a member of The Climbing Works/Mini Climbing Works?

If you are not already a member of The Climbing Works/The Mini Climbing Works, you must register with us first. For the competition, your child must either be registered as a junior member if they are 14 years and above (must have completed a junior assessment prior to the competition) or be signed in under the supervision of an adult member. To become an adult member you must either have previous climbing experience or have completed one of our supervisory inductions.

We will run one of these on the day of the competition for those who need it at 10:45am and 3:15pm, for the cost of £5 each.  If you are required to do a supervisory induction, please complete the waiver online before hand. You must arrive at least 10 minutes before this induction time to ensure you get a space on the induction.

If you have previous climbing experience and you're a member of another bouldering wall, but you're not registered at ours, you will also need to complete our online waiver before your visit to register.

One adult can supervise up to two competitors.

Please note, parents will not be allowed on the mats, only judges will.

Are you able to volunteer?

In order to keep costs to a minimum for our selection day, we need volunteers to judge the competition blocs. All volunteers will be briefed before the competition and will have a specific bloc that they will be judging. Anybody that is able to offer their support by judging will be given a 20% discount on their child's entry and a free hot drink. You can be down as the supervisor of a competitor and as a judge.

We understand that this is not possible for everybody, but if you can, then we will be very grateful.
