Who says boulderers don’t need stamina…… The Climbing Works will be able to have the longest, steepest and most sustained routes of any climbing centre in the UK, without the hassle of ropes, climbing partners, harnesses or any of the associated iron-mongery! We aim to provide a number of very long and sustained routes, graded from F6a to F8b. • The Peak Bouldering Company was formed in July 2006 to develop and progress a project to set up and manage a dedicated indoor bouldering centre in Sheffield, South Yorkshire. • We have secured the use of a huge factory to house our climbing centre, with a floor area of 10050 square feet. • The Company’s goal is to create the best bouldering facility in the UK, on a scale that will rival anything in the world. • The Climbing Works will be a dedicated indoor bouldering centre serving Sheffield, the Peak District and will be a wall of National and International significance. • The centre will only provide bouldering facilities as this is a climbing activity that has grown in popularity of recent years and is one of the main activities pursued by climbers in the adjacent Peak District – the Peak District National Park is the busiest National Park in the United Kingdom and serves as a magnet to climbers on a national level. • The centre will provide bouldering facilities for all ability groups, from school age beginners to the very best climbers in the world. The wall is to be designed and built by Andy Long, Jason Pickles and Percy Bishton who between them have built and designed many of the best climbing and bouldering facilities in the UK. • Regular changing of boulder problems is essential for ensuring that customers do not lose interest in the design of the bouldering wall. The centre’s Managing Director is internationally renowned as one of the world’s leading route setters who regularly sets routes at World Cup climbing competitions throughout the world. Percy also designed, and delivers the current Climbing Wall Manufacturers Association (CWMA) route-setting course. In addition to Percy the centre will also be utilising the route setting skills of a number of internationally qualified route setters all of whom are regular route setters on the World Cup circuit. These will include Ian Vickers (European Champion in 1998 and Chief Route Setter at 2 successive World Championships), Laurent Boudier of France (Chief Route Setter at numerous World Cups and former French National Team Coach) and all being well, Jacky Godoffe, also from France and one of the worlds best boulder problem setters. Most importantly, this team of route-setters can provide interesting and excellent quality boulder problems of all difficulties. Whilst The Climbing Works will cater for the elite climbers needs, our emphasis is on the provision of an un-surpassed climbing experience for beginner and intermediate level climbers of all ages. • Our management team will strive to encourage new participants to the sport of climbing, and to provide high standards of training and coaching to our customers, regardless of their ability. Due to the size of The Climbing Works and the nature of the design of the walls, we believe that we will be able to cater for all customer requirements – from children trying climbing for the first time, to World Cup competitors preparing for international competition. • The Climbing Works will offer some very easy climbing with some dedicated beginners boulders and a large variety of easy to mid grade climbing for the more experienced climbers to use either as training or as part of their warm-up routine. All of the climbing surfaces will feature reconfigurable holds including micro and macro features to create a constantly changing set of climbs. • The bouldering walls will be a maximum of 4.5m above the landing surface ensuring that the walls conform to the relevant part of the forthcoming European Standard for bouldering walls (prEN 12572 –II). • Initial plans show that the climbing surfaces will be approximately 1000 m2 requiring approximately 650 m2 of high quality safety surfaces beneath them. • The centre will also include toilet and changing facilities for the comfort of our customers and a refreshment/spectator area will be situated adjacent to the main competition area of the climbing walls. An on-site café, serving hot drinks and snacks will help to provide an atmosphere that fosters the social aspect of the sport. • Provision is included in the design for the inclusion of a small retail outlet but initially this will only provide very basic climbing essentials. The possibility of expanding the range of products available will be examined at a later stage.
