The Climbing Works International Masters bouldering competition - report

The Climbing Works played host to a Masters bouldering competition a week after European Championships in Birmingham, hoping to attract a few superstars from the Europeans for a big money show-down in Sheffield. With the British Bouldering Championships series of competitions not taking place this winter, the Climbing Works Masters event would also give a load of the British competition boulderers a chance to stretch their arms and legs in anger against some stiff competition.

The Climbing Works sports the UK’s biggest dedicated competition specific wall, and so was the perfect venue for a big International. No problems with setting up temporary walls here – the competition walls were designed specifically to challenge the best in the World, and that’s exactly what they do! Added to this was the fact that The Works chipped in a massive prize fund of nearly £4000, all was set for a fantastic event. (If you win the British championships you win £250 – if you win at the Works you get 3 times this amount!)

In the event, the huge influx of International talent was not forthcoming, with a rescheduled World Cup event in Germany meaning that a lot of the European climbers stayed away. However, the event still attracted a lot of big names from all over the place. Even Tyler Landman had booked a flight over to the UK from his current home in Boulder, Colorado for a go at scooping a load of cash.

So, after 2 hours of qualification for the men and women the finals were all set to be a real battle of the big names. Amongst the women finalists were Sabine Bacher who had come 6th in the European Championships just 6 days previously, as well as Audrey Seguy and Rachel Seymour, although it was youngster Leah Crane who took top spot after the qualification round. In the men’s qualifier a glut of strong climbers were all fighting for the 6 final places, but in the end it was the usual suspects of Earl, Pasquil, Barrans, Smith and Croxall who all sneaked in to the finals, accompanied by winner of the qualifying round, Tyler Landman, who was crushing every problem in his path and looking streets ahead of everybody else!

So, as the route setters went to work on the final problems, it looked all set for a battle royale between Seguy and Bacher in the Womens event, and Landman versus all-comers in the men’s! First up was the Womens final, and there were a few surprises in store.

Whilst Audrey Seguy was looking good early on, it seemed pretty obvious that her continuing injury problems (bad fingers and knees!) were causing her some difficulties as the round progressed. Meanwhile Sabby Bacher seemed to be cruising to certain glory, until she faltered at problem 2 – stymied by a debilitating slap from a volume to a selection of gruesome slopers. Leah Crane, fresh from success winning qualification started well, but faded towards the end of the round as the difficulty level increased. Audrey did well on the first 4 problems but was finally defeated on the last 2 problems, whilst Sabby stepped up the pace to dispatch the particularly awkward problem 5 to take a well deserved victory.

The men’s finals were always going to be a brutal affair. With a field of this sort of quality the winner would have to display the ability to do every type of climbing in order to succeed. In the end it was incredibly close. The route setters had asked a lot of the climbers. In order to win you should be able to climb delicate balancy slabs, powerful overhangs, fist-jamming cracks in roofs and the insane surrealism of the upside volume-fest on the last problem. It was all set to be a true test of climbing skill, and it truly didn’t disappoint! While Mark Croxall made short work of the first few problems, British Champion Earl had a nightmare on the slab, which lead to a number of wall-kicking tantrums (much to the delight of the crowd). Meanwhile, newcomers Dave Barrans and Ryan Pasquil showed their class by methodically destroying all problems in their path. Ty Landman was last out in the final, and looked peerless for the first 4 problems – dispatching with ease, campusing moves where others had fallen off, and even missing holds out as if they were un-necessary! Surely the 16 year old was going to walk away with it?

Well, as we all know, competition climbing is so often the cruellest of all sports, and this final was no different. Having flashed the first 4 problems with ease, Tyler stepped up to problem 5 (the overhanging barrel which was the problem we all thought would suit Tyler the best) and he fell off! Not once, but 3 or 4 times, leaving him very upset and very pumped. His loss of composure was pretty evident, and he was obviously really fed up! By the time he got on the last problem, he was still pumped and was so cheesed off that his concentration was totally blown, and that was it. As time was called and very disgruntled Landman stormed off leaving a delighted and very deserving Ryan Pasquill to scoop the big money. Tyler ended up in third place and Dave Barrans sneaked into second place leaving a disconsolate Earl in fourth. Of course, all these traumas were promptly forgotten as we then all headed off into Sheffield city centre for a huge drunken night out at the ShAFF party. Huge thanks must go to the event sponsors who put a load of time and money into this event to make it work. Particular thanks should go to Ian Smith who did a fantastic job of commentating during the final, and also to Scarpa, Holdz, Five Finger Thing, The Clinic, Strappal and Blurr, without whom this event might not have happened. It is great that some climbing companies are getting a bit keener to get involved in support of these types of events. Long may this type of support continue. All in all, the Climbing Works International Masters bouldering competition was a fantastic success – roll on next year!
