The Climbing Works International Masters Bouldering Competition - Regulations For Competitors

This document is intended to be a guide to the rules for competitors.
The format of the qualifying round is based on the standard bouldering league format, i.e. 10 problems to be attempted within 2 hour time period with no isolation. Subsequent rounds have isolation and problems to be attempted on-sight, with a set number, sequence, climbing period and rest period.

All Rounds

  1. Each problem has a pre designated starting position, consisting of two fixed positions for both hands and optionally two fixed positions for both feet. Starting holds must be clearly marked.
  2. The finishing hold must be clearly marked.
  3. A bonus point will be awarded for holding a specified hold. This hold must be clearly marked.
  4. Brushes may be used by competitors to clean holds that may be reached from the ground. Other holds may be cleaned competitors as long as there is no tactile inspection of the holds.
  5. An attempt is successful when the finishing hold is held with both hands and the judge says OK.

Qualifying Round

  1. There is no isolation for this round. Competitor’s may watch and communicate with others.
  2. 2) Competitor’s must had their scorecard to the marshal before attempting a problem.
  3. 3) Competitor’s are allowed three attempts on each problem. A successful first attempt is worth 10 points, a successful second attempt is worth 7 points, a successful third attempt is worth 4 points. Holding the bonus hold is worth 1 point. This point does not get added to the score but is a tie break, i.e. your score might be shown as 110+12 indicating that you flashed 11 problems and got all 12 bonus holds. problem is completed).
  4. 4). A technical incident is defined as; a broken or loose hold, or any other occurrence that results in a disadvantage or unfair advantage to a competitor, which is not the result of an action on the part of the competitor. The problem must be repaired and the competitor allowed another attempt on the problem.
  5. 5) After the qualifying round the competitors shall be ranked according to the total number of points scored and then the total number of bonus points scored
  6. The fixed quotas for the final round of a competition shall be as follows:
    1. If there are 10 or fewer competitors in the category, 4 competitors;
    2. If there are between 11 or more competitors inclusive in the category, 6 competitors

Final Round

  1. Each problem shall be allocated a pre designated period of time. The period of time for problems is the same for all problems in a given round.
  2. The beginning (and ending) of every period of time shall be announced by a loud and clear signal. At this signal the competitors that are climbing must stop climbing and enter the resting area. This area must not allow observation of any other routes. The climber who has finished his resting period must move on to the next problem.
  3. A competitor may ask the Jury at any time how much of their allocated time remains. The Jury shall inform each competitor when only 60 seconds remain.
  4. A competitor may attempt a problem as many times as they wish within the allocated time.
  5. If a competitor successfully completes a route within the allocated time, he/she must move onto the resting area.
  6. Brushes may be used by competitors to clean holds that may be reached from the ground.
  7. After each round of the competition the competitors shall be ranked according to the following criteria :
    i). The number of successfully completed problems.
    ii). The total number of problems completed in the first attempt.
    iii). The total number of attempts to complete the problems (if completed).
    iv). The total number of bonus points.
    v). The total number of bonus points reached in the first attempt.
    vi). The total number of attempts to complete these bonus points.
  8. In the case of tied places, the results of the preceding rounds shall be taken into account.
  9. Superfinals: If after applying the count-back procedure there exists a tie for first place at the end of the final round, a superfinal shall be held on one problem.
