C.W.I.F - Climbing Works International Festival - April 12th 2008

This year we thought we would do something different, we've had enough C.W.I.M for the time being so we thought we'd give you a bit of C.W.I.F. for 2008.

So what is the C.W.I.F. - well it's more inclusive. A new circuit will be set that's available to all of our customers but it will also act as the qualifier for the evenings hardcore competition. Plus we will have a marquee in the car park with a BBQ and some beers to entertain you during the re-setting breaks. And if that's not enough we will also have the lovely Mr Niall 'Grimer' Grimes doing one of his after dinner speeches. And how much is this going to cost you. Nothing* more than a normal wall entry fee!! (*BBQ and drinks are NOT free though)

The Details:

The Circuit - 30 problems ranging from easy(ish) to hard.
No entry fee (just normal wall admission)
Semi final - 4 problems, 5 minutes on 5 minutes off. IFSC 'Classic' format.
Final - 3 problems, 2 minutes joint observation per problem, 4 minutes climbing time.
Variation of new IFSC Finals format 16 climbers in the semi, 3 in the final Male and female categories
Prize money: minimum of £600 first prize, prizes down to 5th place.
Team element: Teams of 4 (at least 1 female) compete in the qualification.
Team prize of £300 if you can beat The Climbing Works Team!!

We have been having trouble applying for change of use (from industrial to leisure) for the Climbing Works Bristol site, despite unanimous support for the project from everybody we know, including the Minister of Sport, and the General Secretary of the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC).

Whilst this is going to hold us up, The Climbing Works are still hugely motivated for this project, and we hope to bring the south western climbing community a more positive update in the next few months. At the moment though, our proposed opening date of November is not going to happen although we hope that 2008 will be the year we can at last open the Worlds biggest bouldering wall in Bristol.

23 Nov 2006

Well the news is out now. The Climbing Works will open its doors at 10am on Sunday 3rd December. We are all very excited about the wall and we hope that it will live up to your expectations.

We are hosting the British Bouldering Team Trials on our official opening day (9th Dec) so get yourself down for a clamber and watch.

As we are hosting the Trials less than a week after opening we have decided that we won't set the Comp Wall initially (seems crazy to set it and then strip it 3 days later) so unfortunately for the first week you will be limited to a mere 800+ sqm of climbing. We hope you will cope.

"Opening offer"

The Climbing Works would like to make you a once in a lifetime special offer to celebrate our soon-to-be status of the World's Biggest Bouldering Wall. We already have the BEST bouldering wall in the UK and we are not even half way there yet. We'd show you but we'd have to kill you so there seems little point in doing that. Our official opening will be 9th December but we will be open well before then (we'll let you know with 1 or 2 weeks notice).

In a blatant attempt to ease potential cash flow problems (and therefore of course spend more money on the place BEFORE we open rather than have to add stuff once we are open) we would like to make the following special offer.

The first 50 people (over 18's) to send us a cheque for £202 will get an annual membership for £200 - the £2 is the lifetime registration that EVERYONE pays, even LuH and LuA will be paying their £2's. This stacks up very nicely against the normal annual membership fee of £300.

And the first 50 U18's who send us a cheque for £162 will get an annual membership for £160 (same deal about the registration fee). Again we think this is good value when compared with the normal annual fee of £240. Note though that 14-17 year olds will have to undergo some kind of Green Card test before being allowed to use the Climbing Works unsupervised. U14's will not be allowed to use the centre unsupervised except in exceptional circumstances.

The deal is the first 50 cheques for £202 and the first 50 cheques for £162 that land on our doorstep from Monday onwards get the deal - sorry cheques only, no cards as we won't have the PDQ's set up until nearer opening.

All monies are of course completely refundable should Little London Road suddenly disappear from the face of the earth or some other such calamitous event prevent us from opening. The memberships are valid for 1 year from the date of opening.

Benefits to full members:
We are working on other things but at the moment the full membership deal includes:
10% discount in the shop (please note that initially the shop will focus on essentials but we will be expanding it fairly rapidly)
10% discount on course including the coaching courses that we will be offering from some of the best climbers around.

So make your cheques payable to THE CLIMBING WORKS and send us them to
The Climbing Works
Unit B
Centenary Works
Little London Road

S8 0UJ

Please remember to stick a passport photo in with your cheque so we can have your membership cards all ready for you.

Ps we will let the lucky few have a sneak preview at some stage but NO CAMERAS will be allowed.
