CLIMBING WORKS BRISTOL
Opening 2008
OUR COMPANY
The Peak Bouldering Company was formed in
July 2006 to develop a dedicated indoor bouldering centre in Sheffield. Motivated
by the unprecedented success of this venture we are currently in the process
of developing a Climbing Works Bristol with Ron
Barraclough. The building is a circa 1960s industrial unit. The building
has a floor area of 15246 square feet (THAT IS HUGE) with its own extensive
parking area.
The Company’s goal is to create
the best bouldering facilities in the UK, on a scale that will rival anything
in the world.
From the offices of the Minister for Sport:
Richard Caborn MP says
“Climbing
Works is a fantastic opportunity for the people of Bristol and surrounding
areas to gain experience in climbing in a safe and well supervised environment
and offers people of all ages and abilities the opportunity to gain the skills
needed to boulder (climbing above a padded surface) safely in a rope free
climbing centre.
Climbing Works Bristol will help cater for
the regional growth in interest for indoor rock climbing. This comes at an
opportune time as government strives to engage young people in sport and leisure.
I was able to take my two young grandchildren
(4 and 5 years old) on a session to the climbing Works in Sheffield, which
they loved. Since the access is much easier than a conventional climbing centre
they were able to climb straight away in a safe environment.
Having seen the world-class facility provided
in Sheffield I would highly recommend a Climbing Works for the City of Bristol
to help in the growth and development of the sports and leisure industry”

OUR PRODUCT
The Climbing Works Bristol will be a dedicated
indoor bouldering centre serving Bristol and the South West of England and will
be a climbing centre of national and international significance, on a scale
that will rival anything in the world.
- The centre will only provide bouldering facilities,
as this is a climbing activity that has grown in popularity of recent years.
- The centre will provide bouldering facilities
for all ability groups, from school age beginners to the very best climbers
in the world. The wall is to be designed and built by Andy Long, Jason Pickles,
Percy Bishton and Ron Barraclough who between them have built and designed
many of the best climbing and bouldering facilities in the UK.
- Regular changing of boulder problems is essential
for ensuring customers do not lose interest in the design of the bouldering
wall. The Managing Director of Climbing Works Bristol Ron Barraclough is nationally
renowned as one of the country’s leading route setters who regularly
sets at regional and national climbing competitions.
In addition to Ron the centre will be utilising the route setting skills of
experienced local/regional setters who have an enthusiasm for and personal
interest in the quality and variety of the problems on offer. We will also
employ the services of a number of internationally qualified route setters
all of whom are regular route setters on the World Cup circuit. These will
include Percy Bishton, who for the last 11 years has worked as a professional
route setter and has worked at numerous climbing walls throughout the UK and
has set routes at numerous national and international events held in the UK.
For the past 3 years Percy has been qualified as an international chief route
setter and has worked at numerous events including 2 World Championships.
He is now considered one of the foremost route setters for Bouldering competitions
and consequently now receives appointments as Chief Route Setter for World
Cup events.
Ian Vickers (European Champion in 1998 and Chief Route Setter at 2 successive
World Championships), Laurent Boudier of France (Chief Route Setter at numerous
World Cups, Chief Route Setter at the World Youth Championships 2004 and former
French National Team Coach) and Jacky Godoffe, also from France – Jacky
is in charge of appointing the route setters for all World Cup events and
could therefore be described as the Chief Chief Route Setter.
Ron is also employed as the national trainer of professional route-setters
for the Climbing Wall Manufacturing Association (CWMA) since 2000 and amongst
other things he has co-developed and delivered the CWMA Route Setting Course
over this period to a number of centres and climbing walls through out the
UK, including various military establishments. As a holder of the Single Pitch
Award (SPA) award he also delivers performance-coaching holidays for Rock
and sun Ltd. and has been an active instructor and climbing coach for over
eight years.
- Whilst The Climbing Works will cater for the
elite climbers needs, our emphasis is on the provision of an un-surpassed
climbing experience for beginner and intermediate level climbers of all ages.
- Our management team will strive to encourage
new participants to the sport of climbing, and to provide high standards of
training and coaching to our customers, regardless of their ability. Due to
the size of The Climbing Works and the nature of the design of the walls,
we believe that we will be able to cater for all customer requirements –
from children trying climbing for the first time, to World Cup competitors
preparing for international competition.
- The Climbing Works will offer some very easy
climbing with some dedicated beginners boulders and a large variety of easy
to mid grade climbing for the more experienced climbers to use either as training
or as part of their warm-up routine. All of the climbing surfaces will feature
re configurable holds including micro and macro features to create a constantly
changing set of climbs.
- The bouldering walls will be a maximum of
4.5m above the landing surface ensuring that the walls conform to the relevant
part of the forthcoming European Standard for bouldering walls (prEN 12572
–II). Initial plans show that the climbing surfaces will be approximately
1300 m2 requiring approximately 750 m2 of high quality safety surfaces beneath
them.
- The centre will also include toilet and changing
facilities for the comfort of our customers and a refreshment/spectator area
will be situated adjacent to the main competition area of the climbing walls.
An on-site café, serving hot drinks and food will help to provide an
atmosphere that fosters the social aspect of the sport.
Provision is included in the design for the inclusion of a small retail outlet
but initially this will only provide very basic climbing essentials. The possibility
of expanding the range of products available will be examined at a later stage.
